Hericium erinaceus — Lion's Mane — takes its name from its distinctive cascading, mane-like fruiting body. In East-Asian herbal practice it is known as the mushroom of clarity and mental fortitude, with a long tradition of use in both Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine and a particularly notable association with Buddhist monastic practice — traditionally used by monks as a functional food to support sustained concentration and composure during meditation and study. It also appears in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing, China's oldest herbal text, as a mushroom prized for overall vitality.
In modern nutritional science, Lion's Mane is naturally rich in hericenones (in the fruiting body) and erinacines (in the mycelium) — compounds studied by researchers worldwide for their effects on neural health and cognitive function.
